The Curriculum

 

 

 

                   "The curriculum is broad, balanced and relevant to pupils needs.  It provides pupils

                     with opportunities to promote their knowledge and understanding in all subjects of

                     the National Curriculum, including French.  The recommended curriculum for

                     children under five years of age is followed carefully in the Reception and Nursery

                     class"

NURSERY AND RECEPTION

 

 

Nursery

 

 

Nursery and Reception follow the curriculum guidance for the foundation stage.  Children are taught the six areas of learning:

 

  1. Personal, social and emotional development - promoting community values, self-esteem, social skills, attention skills, and enthusiasm for learning
  2. Communication, language and literacy - to practise and extend vocabulary, to talk and communicate effectively with others, learn about and use words and text to create sentences.
  3. Mathematical development - develop an understanding of number, measurement, pattern, shape and space.
  4. Knowledge and understanding of the world - to find out about their environment and people and places that have significance in their lives; solve problems, experiment, predict and plan.
  5. Physical development - develop fine and gross motor skills, increase understanding of how their bodies work and what they need to do to be healthy and safe.
  6. Creative development - explore thoughts, ideas and feelings through art, design and technology, music, dance and role play.

 

 

KEYSTAGE 1 AND 2

 

 

All subjects of the National Curriculum are taught plus French:

 

  • English - Reading, writing, spelling, grammar, comprehension, literature composition.
  • Mathematics - Mechanical and mental, Problem solving, Times tables.
  • Science - Scientific enquiry, processes and living things, materials and their properties, and physical processes.
  • Religious Education - We follow the Catholic "Here I Am" scheme of work, weekly mass, and assembly. 
  • I.C.T  - Use of Word, Excel, Paint, roamer robot and educational packages.

 

 A Year 3 I.C.T. Lesson

  •  Physical Education - Including Football, Netball, Cricket, Swimming, Athletics and Gymnastics.
  • Arts and Crafts - Working with various materials and textures, modelling with clay, and sewing.
  • French - Greetings, numbers, directions, time, going shopping, and travel.
  • Music - Exploring sounds, duration, pulse, pitch, rhythm, timbre, tempo and dynamics.
  • Geography - The local area, contrasting locality, weather systems, water coarses, environmental issues, mapping.
  • History - Notable dates in history, time lines, the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, famous people.
  • Design Technology - To design, build and evaluate a variety of projects using different materials.
  • P.S.H.E. (Personal Social Health Education) - Feelings, keeping healthy, relationships, attitudes and values.

Although teachers at Saint Anthony's follow areas of the National Curriculum, as an independent school, we have total control over the way we teach, and what material and subject matter we introduce.

Guitar lessons

 

 

 

Each year the children receive training in Cycling Proficiency by Road Safety Officers from Shire Hall.  They are tested on completion of the course.
